You and your family are not alone There are others going through the same thing.
Many do not understand the complexities of incarceration. The unseen victims of mass incarceration are the families that support or rely on those individuals. People fail to understand that although punishment most certainly should exist, who we are punitively punishing are the children and families that rely on the work and aid of the incarcerated. Although there are work release programs, even if a judge orders work release, it is up to the individual facility to approve the inmate for the program. If they are not approved, then jobs are lost, or the person has to work for below market wages. Incarceration creates a vicious cycle of debt and regret. There is hope. There are organizations committed to helping break the cycles and help ease the burden.
