CURE supports repeal of the death penalty in all states and the federal government. No more executions should take place.
Why We Support This Position:
- Under the death penalty innocent people are executed. Since 1977, seventy-eight people have been released from death row due to wrongful convictions.
- The death penalty is administered inequitably. Application of the death penalty consistently discriminates against the poor and minorities. Those being executed are generally poor, under-educated, and represented by ill-equipped or ill-motivated public defenders or court-appointed lawyers.
- The death penalty does not deter crime. FBI statistics reveal that the murder rates in states with the death penalty are no lower than states without a death penalty.
