Death Penalty

Picture
CURE Position

CURE supports repeal of the death penalty in all states and the federal government. No more executions should take place.

Why We Support This Position:

  1. Under the death penalty innocent people are executed. Since 1977, seventy-eight people have been released from death row due to wrongful convictions.

  2. The death penalty is administered inequitably. Application of the death penalty consistently discriminates against the poor and minorities. Those being executed are generally poor, under-educated, and represented by ill-equipped or ill-motivated public defenders or court-appointed lawyers.

  3. The death penalty does not deter crime. FBI statistics reveal that the murder rates in states with the death penalty are no lower than states without a death penalty.
